There is very little parents can do to prevent their children from developing eczema, according to new guidelines from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), published on April 7, 2026.
Although research has not shown that common strategies such as skipping baths, special diets, probiotics, and breastfeeding help kids avoid eczema, experts suggest that only proper skin care treatments can address the condition.
Children who develop eczema undergo a wide range of skin care treatments to help calm their itchy skin and reduce redness, according to the new guidelines of the American Academy of Dermatology. These are the first-ever guidelines released by the AAD regarding skin problems in children. According to an expert, eczema is quite common in kids, though it may not look or behave the same way in adults. He also mentioned that because eczema damages the quality of life of children and their families, there is a need for proper guidelines for kids to ensure they receive the best skin care treatment.
Eczema affects a large number of children worldwide, according to researchers at Harvard Medical School, who reported in a journal published on January 12, 2024. The common symptoms identified during the research were dry patches, itchiness, rashes, and rough bumps. Based on the existing skin care options, the experts opined that more research is needed to develop effective solutions to address the issue. According to them, moisturizers alone can’t treat the condition. It can only give a conditional treatment to reduce the occurrence of eczema in children.

Guideline writers gave strong recommendations regarding the treatment of eczema in children. Proven treatment options include:
- Moisturizer to ensure a calming effect
- Topical steroid creams are the first-line treatment for eczema flares
- Topical calcineurin inhibitors to manage eczema flares
- Topical JAK inhibitors to reduce the severity of dry, patchy, and itchy skin in patients with mild to moderate eczema
- Monoclonal antibodies can reduce the complexity of eczema symptoms, lessen flares, and improve itching in patients with moderate to severe eczema
- JAK inhibitors to reduce the severity of eczema symptoms and enhance itching in patients with moderate to severe eczema
- Phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors to lessen itchiness and reduce the frequency of eczema flares
The guidelines recommended bathing, wet wrap therapy, and light therapy for kids with eczema. The experts, in this context, disapproved of the excessive use of steroid pills or vaccinations. They also disapproved of excessive use of topical antimicrobials and of a combination therapy known as PUVA phototherapy.
