Millions of women suffer in silence from treatable pelvic organ prolapse, a new study says.

Several people mistakenly believe that the condition is just a normal part of aging. Doctors say early treatment, along with strengthening core and pelvic floor muscles, can improve results and quality of life.

According to a urogynecologist at Florida Medical Clinic in Orlando, it is quite common among women. The news got attention soon after it was published on May 12, 2026.

Experts at the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists added to the publication that a new Orlando Health survey found that half of women incorrectly think bladder leakage is simply a normal part of aging. Nearly a third think pelvic organ prolapse only affects women over the age of 60. Another third thinks you have to have been pregnant to develop the condition, and 1 in 3 women do not know that surgery is even an option.

Doctors say that while childbirth, aging, and genetics can increase risk, strengthening core and pelvic floor muscles and seeking treatment early can make a major difference.
