Wednesday April 01, 2026 (Medipedia News) – One new COVID variant is beginning to affect the global health landscape.

Health officials indicate the variant, known as BA.3.2 or Cicada, is quietly spreading, but is now affecting the lives of several people across the U.S.A. and around the globe. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that cases are gradually rising. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also added the new COVID variant to its “variants of monitoring” list as the virus spreads in many countries.

So far, Cicada has been detected in more than 20 nations. In a few regions, health experts have detected 30% of cases. CDC mentioned in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that monitoring the spread of the new COVID variant provides key information for further research on the variant and to determine what steps should be taken to increase immunity through vaccination.

The new variant has been named after a breed of insects that came into the limelight for staying inactive even after detection. The effects of the virus start to be reflected after some days of infection.

Since then, Cicada has been detected in wastewater from 132 locations in at least 25 states.

The first case was reported globally in South Africa in November 2024. The surge was reported in September 2025. BA.3.2 has been noted to have 70 to 75 mutations, making it distinct from previous strains.

As of March 30, 3.7% of the variant had been detected in wastewater, according to data tracking. The variant was trailed by XFG, which remains dominant at 53%, followed by LF.7 at 10.3%, USA Today reported. Experts are researching how BA.3.2 becomes a dominant strain in the U.S., so that awareness campaigns can be organized to help people understand how to prevent infection. Low vaccination rates and a lack of awareness about how to stop the virus’s spread have made people vulnerable.

So far, the symptoms appear to be identical to those of other COVID variants. Some include:

  • Sneezing
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Unable to smell
  • Change in taste
  • Sore throat

WHO says that some people also reported a painful sore throat. USA Today reported that there is no specific data showing that the new variant is more severe than other variants. In another report, the CDC stated that monitoring the spread of Cicada provides ample data about its potential to evade immunity. Experts are studying whether previous vaccination can help prevent infection. CDC also highlighted the importance of additional data to identify the best possible solutions.

Vaccines still help prevent severe weakness and death. Health experts have suggested simple steps to reduce the risk.

  • Wear a top-quality mask
  • Stay home if you are ill
  • Get tested if you notice symptoms
  • Keep the vaccines and booster doses ready
  • Get enough rest
  • Use over-the-counter medications to control symptoms
  • Keep your room airy
  • Maintain hygiene
